Afterdark analyzes the past & present occurrence of the perceived issue of homosexuality across two different time periods and two different countries. The importance of this crossing is to highlight how the implications of queerness, toxic masculinity, heteronormativity, heterosexuality, tension & silence in queer relationships, secrecy of intimacy and persistent othering are timeless and still live on today, regardless of physical geography and era.
Although Dakan is a French Guinean ‘97 film and Moonlight is a Black American ‘16 film, the varied plot and decade difference allows for us to easily notice that the social criticism received by those existing in the world of queerness has remained active and standing. As we precisely compare the lives and desire of liberty amongst two very different black male queer relationships, with both seeking the will to live unapologetically and freely without societal pressures, we recognize that the same outward hardships are faced even 20 years later, despite monumental factors such as time and location.
